in Cumanayagua on January 1, 1864 and had the following six children:

  • Salvador Antonio Brígido died March 30, 1898 fighting in the Cuban War of Independence.

  • Luisa Josefa Teófila (Luisita) had blue eyes. She was physically paralyzed but a beauty to look at. She lived with her parents all her life and had no children.

vinos_riera.jpgMiguel Riera y Matas

Born in Spain in the late 1840's, descendant of four seafaring brothers named Riera who lived in Barcelona in the 1700’s.

Miguel became a vintner and founded his own business. Vinos Miguel Riera y Matas, authorized by permission of King Alfonso XII in 1881, has produced white and muscatel wines into current times.

He married Vinyet Vidal (María de Vinyet Vidal y Martí) in the 1870's.

Her brother was José Vidal Martí, who was the mayor of Sitges in late 1880's.

Miguel and Vinyet had 13 children in a span of 18 years:

1.   María de Vinyet

Born Vicente Ramón June 6, 1845 in a rural area of Las Villas, Cuba, of Casiano Rumbaut and Candelaria de la Cruz.

Married his second cousin Manuela Yanes Díaz.  They had six children:

He was a blue-eyed man of medium build, a carpenter, who was known as a guitar player and singer who made up his own verses.

Died May 16, 1915.

Hermenegildo López y González de Soler

Aka Don Merejo.

Born in the mid 1800's in Cuba and died in Cuba.

Had several children from his first marriage.

Later married Rosa Fundora
in 1873. She gave birth to his fourteen children in the span of twenty years. They were named with a flair:

1.      Herminia was born 1876; died the following year.

2.      The girl born the year after that, 1877, was also called Herminia.

3.      Abelardo

12.  Diego

13.  Dionisio

14.  Zoila Rosa

Hermenegildo had a famous bad temper, but Zoila, the youngest child, could maneuver him with her flirtatious and seductive manner.  Maybe she was also able to handle him because by the time she was born, he was an old man already.  In a moment of his temper flaring, she would grab him and calm him down.  Authoritarian with everyone, he was called "Don Merejo" behind his back, which sounds a little crude in Spanish. One of his sons disappeared in adolescence after a vicious fight with him.
